Utopia School is hosting a 5 day pop-up school in January, 2018, focused on the practical aspects of opening a new community space in New York City and/or the northeast USA. This will be an opportunity to gather with like minded people interested in opening a long term space and begin to workshop, and even carry out the preparatory steps to doing just that. This session of the school is looking to incorporate talks and workshops on community land trusts, building coops, fundraising, and presentations from spaces working within gentrifying cities.
The January 2018 Session of the Utopia School is generous hosted by Flux Factory.
Utopia School was pleased to participate in the September 2016 Alt-CPH Art Fair. Classes included Pancakes and Records, Architectures of Desire, Dictionary of the Present (A Dictionary Writing Group), Listening: English Conversation, as well as spontaneous classes. Here is a full program for Alt-CPH 2016.
Utopia School is an ongoing project that shares information about both failed and successful utopian projects and work towards new ones. For us, utopias are those spaces and initiatives that re-imagine the world in some crucial way. The school engages and connects people through urgent conversations, with the goal of exploring, archiving and distributing collective knowledge throughout this multi-city project.
AUGUST 2016, COPENHAGEN
The Utopia School is a temporary free school and social center for sharing information about both failed and successful utopian projects while working towards new ones. We define Utopia as those spaces and initiatives which re-imagine the world in some crucial way.
10 - 12 people from around the world are gathering to live together and run the school as a free space for all. We are open Wednesday – Sunday with workshops, tea/coffee, food share, and a regular People's Kitchen. Come drop in to say hello and teach/learn in one of our classes!
The School will be located in Fabrikken, upstairs from the Byens Lys cinema in Christiania. If you have trouble finding it, see if you can ask a local Christiania resident to point you in the right direction :) If you get really really lost, give us a call on the Utopia School phone and we will come get you!

Over time, we will create a comprehensive open curricula on utopian thought and practice. Some examples of what we will be studying include physical places, relationship dynamics, systems of organizing, political contexts, common roadblocks, and the methods used to create and sustain these projects.
Berlin Freespaces, Online Map, 2013
Berlin Freespaces, otherwise known as Freiräume Map, Berlin, is an internet-based map depicting various forms of Freiräume (“free spaces,”) in Berlin today, including Hausprojekts (legalized squats), Wagenplätze (trailer communities), co-housing, social centers, tool-shares, hacker spaces and community gardens.
The map is an effort to centralize and expand on scattered pockets of information, including pre-existing databases as well as my own personal archive of Freiräume, which I have been accumulating since 2009.
The map allows the viewer to turn “on” and “off” certain kinds of spaces in order to locate accessible tools and resources, such as wood/metal-working spaces, free building materials, or donation-based health and legal counseling. The purpose of the map is to provide a tool for connection, historical analysis, and community organizing between autonomous, DIY spaces.
This project was made possible with the generous assistance of Eric Brelsford.
